Veggie Bench is an urban farming intervention in the Artport studios in south Tel Aviv. Housed in what was formerly an industrial area, the studios were sorely lacking in green resting spaces. Veggie Bench is a green bench serving both as street furniture and small garden. Like in most places in the Tel Avivian summer, Artport’s air conditioning system is very active. Water waste created by operating air conditioners around the city usually drip drips onto unfortunate passers bys’ heads. Veggie Bench is a development in a series of different prototypes meant to reroute this water into new forms of urban gardening. Instead of being left to drip into the street and evaporate, the water is funneled into and through the bench where it grows various vegetables and herbs for the use of the studio’s residents.
